History Lesson: Mavrick researches the three Gaian Dieties (11/08/2403)
Mavrick would give his subordinates the day off as he got down to doing some research on Thalassa the Goddess of Ki. His main interest would be her relation to the De’rak clan of Timeless, searching to see if she was an intergral part of their culture and religion or if her interest in them ended with them handing over custodianship of the Progression Break artefacts. Mavrick would quickly learn that Thalassa took a very active role in the de’raks’ history, being credited by some theorist for the evolution of the de’raks from their more primitive draconic ancestors. He would also learn that the dragon race did not acknowledge her as an actual god, but simply an extremely powerful channelling being; as such there was no religions based around her per se, but they took her philosophies to heart. In addition to this, Thalassa took a personal interest in the clan, seeing to its needs and ensuring that it was well taken care of from the time that she entrusted them with the guardianship of the shrine.
Once this was established, Mavrick went on to research Thalassa herself, attempting to trace her origins. As best as he could find, it appeared that Thalassa was a denizen of Old Gaia, and was amoung the first recorded channelling in human history. Due to the complexity of Gaia’s strange timelines, it was uncertain whether or not she is from the current branch of humanity or one of its predecessors but history and in some cases mythology tracked her existence back to the early Greek empire, where she carried the name Atalanta. She was also believed to carry the name Hippolyta due to her strong association with the Amazon clan of the Mediterranean, who hail her as their ‘queen-mother’. Due to her age, it is believed that she has gone by many names since then before finally settling on the name Thalassa. He learned also that Thalassa was strongly associated with water due to her Ki affinity and her general attitude, which was most likely the reason that the city which she embodies is submerged beneath the ocean.
Mavrick would then go on to research the other deities. From his research, he would be able to discern that Eranes, the God of Magic, was of Roman descent and much like Thalassa it was indiscernable whether or not he was from the current line of humanity or if he was a member of one of their predecessors. Unlike Thalassa however, it was very difficult to find information on previous identities occupied by Eranes, due most likely to his chaotic nature, which would suggest that he simply did not stay in a single area long enough to establish a name for himself. Most scholars believed it more likely that Eranes was the inspiration behind trickster gods such as Anansi and Puck, as he travelled through the areas where those legends were spawned. He would learn that at present, Eranes was believed to be embodied like his ‘sisters’ as a city, on the continent of his name sake. This chaotic diety has a strong affinity for wind and is believed to rule the icy land at the southern pole.
Chicomecoatl was the last to be researched, and much like Eranes, her history was also shrouded in mystery, but for a much different reason. Chicomecoatl is believed to been born at the beginning of the Aztec Empire which spanned 2000 years, and over that time it is believed that she rose from life as a peasant to royalty, and as her abilities moved past the upper levels of what was accepted as within the known bounds of ‘human’ she transcended from simple royalty to her status as a deity. It is believed that she was the first of the three to assume her status as a ‘god’. By the time that the Americas were ready to be colonised in Oya, Chicomecoatl’s power was so prodigious that she was able to single handedly engage in combat and stalement the entire Crystales Army. To end the stalemate a treaty was drawn up in which Chicomecoatl was made an honourary member of the Crystales Clan, which allowed her to continue to occupy the land which he ancestors had possessed without coming into conflict with that clan. Chicomecoatl, like Thalassa is known to be associated with a few clans in new Gaia, in particular the Behemoth clan of Desolate and another clan whose name, location and origins remains unknown.
Mavrick would wrap up his research late that day, making his way out of the de’rak library intent on doing some Astral training. With his subordinate Seraph.
