Selection Pressure
The four guardians, created as siblings within the same cause would be the Archetype’s only solution to the Destroyer menaces. Synchros, a naturally intuitive entity, was blessed with the gift of foresight, while her ability to bind ether or any of its components made her the very competent healer of the group. Khaaos, was their tactical advisor and most powerful combatant, leading their armies against the horders of soldiers which the Destroyers amassed. Geon was the head tactician and focussed mainly on the support of their squadrons while Dias, the least experienced of them all, took to the front lines to defend against their opponents and aid Khaaos by engaging in direct combat.
Their combined abilities meant that there was no effect which they could not produce within ether, except for those abilities which seemed foreign to them, and all of the Archetype’s line, the ability to create or destroy energy.
Their battles against the Destroyer’s seemed to be endless, with each victory for the Guardians being overshadowed by the knowledge that their Nemeses would return in another generation to once again take them on, dooming them to a perpetual battle, which they simply could not afford to lose.
These battles would continue, generation after generation, with the same outcome, providing no form of recourse for the eternally tiring guardians. In each battle with the Destroyers, the Guardians would find themselves losing more and more of their power, and with Synchros’ ability to replenish them decreasing with each generation of war, it was only an inevitability that their opponents would eventually over power them.
It was for this reason, that the guardians originally sacrificed their ethereal selves and allowed themselves to be bonded to young developing channelers. This provided them an undamaged channeler host, which could now aid them in their battles with the destroyers. As each generation passed, and each host died, the guardians came to be reborn to another channeler, passing the powers along even if the original soul did not survive in its entirety. This new system worked well, and once again, the new humans, Archetype’s legacy, was able to push back its nemesis and hold on to its birth right.
It would not be for some time that this same mechanism which had managed to keep them alive for so long, would prove to be their demise. As the Destroyers also sacrificed their own Ethereal Shells now, they took to piggy backing on the same beings as their eternal nemeses, the same entities who they were trying to destroy. For this reason, it could have been Gaia herself, or Fate, even Archetype, or maybe something else… something more sinister that led to the grandest catastrophe in history.
